JURA. What’s in a Name?
In 1931, Leo Henzirohs founded JURA Elektroapparate AG in a town called Niederbuchsiten, Switzerland (Canton Solothurn), to develop premium household appliances. Today, Niederbuchsiten is still JURA’s headquarters and the actual name of the company was derived from the mountain range that extends from Switzerland to France – the Jura Mountains.
Since 1980s, JURA is well established as one of the pioneers and big contributors to the household automatic espresso / coffee machines and have since extended its repertoire to semi-professional appliances geared towards the hospitality industry as well as offices.
Today, through many joint ventures and such, JURA is a global brand name and has a major presence all over Europe in countries such as Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Austria, and the U.K. Other parts of the world including Australia, S.E. Asia, and of course the U.S. are all familiar with JURA.
JURA’s philosophy is divided into three important areas:
- Design – With an attractive athletic appeal of the “Cool Nordic Design”, JURA machines are constructed with superior functions in mind and “fashioned” for interior design attractiveness. JURA understands the growing shift of the role of the kitchen from a place where meals are prepared to the heart of the household where family, friends, and guests and frequently entertained.
- Coffee Quality – Coffee is one of the largest traded commodities in the world; second only to crude oil. More and more markets in other parts of the world are developing a discerning taste for coffee and classics such as espresso, cappuccino, ristretto, and so on. As such, JURA believes innovative technologies must be implemented in their machines that allow customization, even for the most discerning coffee connoisseur.
- Sustainability – Did you know that JURA developed an automatic switch-off function in the first IMPRESSA model all the way back in 1994? JURA’s stance on sustainability is in line with the growing wave of awareness around the world against waste and the throw-away culture. JURA offers minimal but necessary packaging of its products and is constantly developing technologies to harness power saving endeavors, in addition to a perfect espresso / coffee of course.
JURA has two major core operations:
- Fully automatic espresso machines for home use.
This doesn’t mean it’s just for a home strictly speaking. A growing population now work from home and have home offices or SOHOs.
- Fully automatic espresso machines for commercial use.
Surely this applies to coffee shops and chains such as Starbucks, Tully’s, and so on. But commercial applications are wide and varied. These include hotels, car dealerships, and larger offices are benefiting from innovative and state-of-the-art automatic espresso machines.
Without further ado, let’s take a brief look at some of the popular models in the JURA espresso line.
JURA ENA MICRO 1
The Jura ENA Micro 1 is a compact espresso machine that delivers the perfect cup of coffee. All the work is done by the machine, you only have to fill it up with the right ingredients. If you have grown weary of drinking poorly prepared coffee, this is the machine for you.
The machine features an inbuilt burr grinder. A burr grinder is a must to get evenly grounded coffee beans. This ensures that the hot water is absorbed into the coffee more evenly and thoroughly at the pre-infusion and extraction process. This ensures that the coffee is more aromatic and the flavor is more powerful.
The machine offers users five different types of grind settings. The settings progress gradually from course to fine. The dial might vary greatly according to the kind of coffee put into the machine. With all these different options, it is a great opportunity to experiment. In fact, most users need to experiment with their new espresso machine, regardless of make or model. It usually takes about a week for more users to get a feel on the combination that suits their coffee-drinking experience. Despite the hopper being considerably tiny, it ensures that you only grind the required amount of beans. This reduces the chances of you having to consume stale or rancid coffee. This is especially true for those who drink one cup a day or less.
The unit comes with a decent-sized water tank for its puny size. The water tank can hold thirty-seven ounces of water (1.1 liters). The tank can also be yanked out for refill or you may decide to use a pitcher to refill it while it is in place. This espresso machine also comes with an optional water filter. This is an important device for reducing the calcium and chlorine content in the coffee.
Chlorine has been known to ruin the taste of coffee. A filtration device requires regular replacement. In addition, it can be quite expensive. Failure to use it, however, will see the machine requiring regular decalcification or else, the machine may be at risk of malfunctioning.
The amount of water hardness in your area is what determines whether a filtration device should be used. But the general advice is to use a filter even if the water is on the softer end of the spectrum, especially if you are using tap water.
The espresso machine also features a filler funnel that can be inserted into the power chute for pre-ground coffee. Perfect for those who prefer a decaf at night but the hopper is already filled with gourmet coffee beans. There are some rules when using this including never putting instant coffee in the power chute.
Small as it is, this espresso machine is also programmable. You can choose from a variety of coffee types and between two levels of coffee strength. This is a great setting for people who like their coffee extra strong. Besides that, this machine comes with a lot of pressure. The 15 bars of pressure that is standard with this machine will guarantee you get your coffee at the right pressure (usually around 9 bars for extraction).
The machine comes with an adjustable spout. Although seemingly insignificant, this can be quite convenient. The spout can be adjusted for various types of lengths ranging from approximately 2.2 inches to around 5.5 inches. Adjusting it is quite easy, it only requires a bit of tugging to get it to the right height.
The machine also comes with automated rinsing. Each time before a new cycle, the machine automatically cleans itself up. This ensures that each cup of coffee coming from the machine will not have the problem of “cross-beverage contamination”.
Other Things Worth Noting
It is not possible to steam with this espresso machine. However, this is a small issue compared to the functionality available through this machine. For people who love their froth, there is the option to purchase a froth maker independently. There are many good quality frothers available from recognized manufacturers.
The machine features an easy to understand display panel. Users will have an easy time understanding the controls on this display. The panel is located at the top of the unit. It has options for choosing the cup size, coffee strength, and type.
Other notable features are the energy saving mode, which kicks in around 5 minutes after last use. This feature helps to reduce the amount of power the machine consumes. If you want your next cup of espresso, you will neat to wait a bit for the machine to heat up again.
For those who want to be able to brew coffee at home with minimal fuss and with a small enough machine that can fit most kitchens easily, this espresso machine is definitely worth it. There are two styles – one cup (one spout) or two cups (two spouts for two cups brewed simultaneously). Naturally, the 2 cup style costs more.
It is also worth noting that Jura offers you an excellent warranty with each purchase. The ENA Micro 1 comes with a two-year warranty or before six thousand cups of coffee. You have to register the machine within two weeks after purchase of the warranty to be valid.

Jura ENA Micro 9 One Touch Automatic Coffee Machine is the perfect match for all of those who want a quick drink, not for people who want more control or more coffee variations to choose from. This coffee machine is small and compact, so you can probably imagine it has a small water tank (1.1L). The water tank can be filled with water enough for a day assuming average use of 5 – 6 cups a day. But if you want to drink your espresso, cappuccino, latte or macchiato more frequently, you will need to refill the water tank multiple times during the day.
The Jura ENA Micro 9 One Touch Automatic Coffee Machine is geared for coffee lovers that want to have a quick coffee, made quick and don’t have excessive countertop space. It allows you to choose between a good range of specialties (latte, macchiato, cappuccino, café crème, espresso, hot water) without struggling with complicated operations, adjustments, and settings. JURA ENA 9 One Touch
For those looking for an elegant espresso machine and don’t mind splurging a bit, the Jura ENA 9 is a perfect candidate. It offers a high degree of automation and efficiency expected from JURA. This product is work of art, from the exterior to what is contained under the hood.
One Touch, Many Features
The machine features dual-spout technology with an independent milk dispenser right behind the two spouts. As a result, milk and coffee output is always separate. This is great for those who may not want any milk with their coffee.
It comes fully automated; this is unlike in the semi-automated machines. As a result, you do not have to go through all the motions like the manual or semi-automatic espresso machines. For instance, you don’t need to to froth, grind, tamp and extract in order to get your favorite cup of cappuccino. Everything is done at the touch of a single button. All this does not come at an expense to your espresso needs. The machine has a number of controls that allow you to tweak your cup of coffee to perfection.
The machine is fitted with burr grinder at the top. It is hard to imagine JURA fitting this machine with anything other than a conical burr grinder and, needless to say, it works great. Standard is the option to change how fine or coarse you want your coffee grounded.
The machine features a detachable water reservoir. At 1.1L, this water tank is decent enough for people who drink on a regular basis. The tank needs a bit of clearance when removing it. This comes in at about 22 inches and could be a bit of a problem depending on your kitchen cabinetry height and configuration. Some customers have complained about this. In addition, the company offers a water filter together with each purchase. Regular maintenance such as decalcification is necessary for all machines and the water filter helps regulate that process as well as overall taste.
Coffee strength control is another awesome feature on this machine. For people who like their coffee mild, this feature will be of great use. You can adjust the coffee strength through three modes of high, medium or low. This typically involves controlling the amount of coffee that goes into each cup. The machine also features a control for boosting the aroma. This is for people who love their coffee with an extra kick.
The machine also features fine foam technology. As a result, you can get your favorite cup of macchiato with the right fluff in their froth. This is an important feature for those who love the aesthetics of their coffee as much as they love drinking it. The coffee is delivered through a separate spout that can be adjusted I height. The other end of the spout is attached to the milk container.
A separate doser is also fitted onto this superb machine. At times, you may have a family meet or a friend that has a different reference for their coffee, such as regular pre-ground coffee or decaf. The aroma-boosting feature doesn’t work with pre-ground coffee. This is a small sacrifice to make for having that decaf when you need one.
The machine is also fitted with the auto switch off feature. This is a great feature for when people forget to switch off the machine as they hurry off to work in the morning. Not only does this save a bit of money, it’s also a safety feature.
One of the less frequent complaints noted in this machine is that the cappuccino is not as hot as what you get from commercial coffee vendors or shops. Although the machine is equipped to program two temperature modes, a possible solution is to use a microwave, if you have one, although this is certainly not the best.
Overall, the Jura ENA 9 is an effective machine. It is definitely worth its value. In addition, it has a great exterior design. Its sleek design looks good on any kitchen countertop with adequate height clearance.
JURA IMPRESSA F8 Review
If you are like any of us here at SSA, then one of the first things that you think about in the morning is drinking a cup of coffee. Semi-automatics are great but sometimes, you might just want to push a button and out comes a coffee in seconds. This is the beauty of an automatic espresso / coffee maker.
We have looked at different options above in JURA’s micro and compact machine line. One of their more popular models on the market that still fits the “compact class”, is the Jura Impressa F8.
Although designed for home use, the Jura Impressa F8 is an excellent addition to any home or small office.
Easy to Use
There are so many things that make Imrpessa 8 special, but we must point out that despite all these features, it is quite easy to use Jura Impressa 8 – all it takes is pressing one button and you will be able to make different coffee beverages with ultimate quality.
As mentioned earlier, this is an automatic machine which means that it is able to tamp and grind the beans, brew the coffee and even self-clean. Remember that it takes pressing one button to get all this.
As a leading innovator in espresso machine technology, the first color TFT display was incorporated into this class of JURA’s compact machines. Besides the modern color TFT display and rotary switch dial, this automatic coffee machine includes revolutionary fine foam technology that has gained prominence in the JURA espresso line. In addition, the “Aroma Plus” grinder is twice as fast, but the machine is less noisy compared to earlier models. You can customize your own pre-programmed selections and can even give them an assigned name. The only limitation here is the TFT display and associated buttons can only show up to 4 beverages at a time. The height-adjustable spout can go from 2.55 inches to 4.37 inches.
Needless to say and as per JURA’s standards, this machine is made from high-quality materials and was obviously built to last. The only downside for some people is the fact that this machine is a little bit large and requires a relatively large countertop space even though the Jura Impressa 8 was designed to appear very sleek and modern.
It is available in black color, so the design and color blends in most kitchens or small offices.
Even though Jura Impressa 8 is not among the cheapest automatic coffee machines on the market, it is definitely worth the money. So, if you really enjoy a good espresso, cappuccino, macchiato, and number of other different gourmet options without spending too much hassle making one, count this machine as one of your finalists before making a decision.
